About 7 years ago, when I started publishing online, getting good search engine rankings was very easy. You simply used a keyword took like Wordtracker to find some well searched keyword phrases that had few matching sites, created a page with the phrase in its title, header, and three other locations, and wall-aah, you had instant traffic!
Times have changed. Boy have they changed! The search engines are smarter, particularly Google. If you page does not have “votes of popularity” in the form of back links at credible (and related) sites, your page will not rank at all. In addition, there are a LOT more pages indexed by the search engines now!
So how can you get a site to rank in this day and age? For one thing, you will need to research your topic well. Is this a topic that will get a lot of traffic? And if so, is it already being done to death? Go to my page What Should I Blog About? for more info on how to do this. Once you find what appears to be a topic that is somewhat “open”, your job has only begun. The heavy lifting lies ahead. You must:
- Create a site that is better than the others. This means working your butt off creating useful content that other sites did not bother creating. For example, on this site, I went to the trouble of producing very detailed tutorials for the beginning blogger using dozens of screen shots. Most sites would not bother doing this.
- Promote your great site! You can have the greatest site in the world, but if nobody can find it, it is work done in vain. Generally, you want to get your site completed to a state where it is presentable and useful. At that point you start promoting the daylights out of it. See my tips on blog promotion in the search engines for details.
