Make Money Submitting Photos
Did you know that you can make around a half a dollar per month for each quality photo you submit to each micro-stock photo provider? That is for each photo, so if you submitted four hundred photos, that could amount to a few hundred dollars of income per month! Also, if you submitted the same photo to a number of different micro-stock photo providers, you could multiply that amount even more! What kind of photos? ANSWER: Basically any photo with a captivating subject that is high quality (not a snap shot) without a cluttered or shadowy background or with the background removed. Here is How It Works
1. You join up with any or all of the micro-stock image providers below. It is free. Just make sure that you do not choose to be an exclusive photographer (if offered) as this would prohibit you from distributing photos to other services. Only choose an exclusive relationship if you only want to work with one service.
- ShutterStock – Pays $0.25 per each download of your photo. Make sure to check out their FAQ section and their Submitter Guidelines before submitting work. In 7 or more of your first 10 photos are rejected, then you must wait 30 days before submitting again.
- istockPhoto.com – Pays 20% of the download price. istockPhoto has a free online training manual that gives helpful tips and also discusses reasons why photos might be rejected along with solutions.
- DreamsTime – Pays 30% for non-exclusive images. Up to 60% for exclusives. You should read their article detailing reasons for refusal and also their articles on how to use keywords.
- BigStockPhoto – Earn $0.50 to $3 for each photo acquired by customer. They provide a tutorial for new submitters to learn how to create good photos.
- Fotolia – For non-exclusive photo providers, the commissions vary from 25% to 46%, based on how many total downloads you have.

2. You take quality photos and submit them. Before submitting, you should read the submission guidelines, tips, tutorials, and forums that these micro-stock companies provide to photographers. Keep in mind that they are not shy about rejecting your photos. It is helpful to focus on a theme as well. To get a good idea of what is acceptable quality, simply take a look at what the micro-stock providers already offer to the public.
You will need some sort of photo editing software. Photoshop is the ultimate photo editor, but costs over $600! Gimp is free and will do many of the things Photoshop will do. Also, there is Photoscape, and easy-to-use free program that might work well for many tasks. For more information see Top 11 Free Photo Editors.
3. Continue to submit, whenever you can. Even though the photos you already submitted will continue to earn money, earnings will drop off some with time as people seek newer images.
