Adsense Link Unit at Top of WordPress Blog

If you take a look at the blog screenshot below, you will notice that there is an AdSense link unit circled. With this type of ad, a click on any of the links will take a user to a page of search results. You are compensated if the user clicks on any of the sponsored search results that are displayed. Generally, these type of ad units are good to have at the top of the page as I have shown below. This tutorial will show you how to insert these link units into your blog.

Step 1 – Get Google Adsense Code.
You need to log into your AdSense account. Then click on the AdSense Setup tab and then choose AdSense for Content, as shown below.

Choose the Link unit option, as shown below.

Now, match the link and background colors to your blog colors. If you are using one of the free themes from this site, there is a text file included called ADSENSE-INFO that has color codes. You should match the background of your blog – the ADSENSE-INFO background colors are for sidebars, not the top of the page. Typically, this area of your blog is white. After you match the colors, you might want to  save this color palette.

In the next screen you should either select an existing channel or create a new one. These channels help you track earnings on different blogs or ads in different areas of your blog.

Give your ad a descriptive name so you can use or modify this ad code at another time without going through the whole process again. Click on Submit and Get Code.

Copy the code you see on the next page. You will use it in Step 2.

Step 2 – Paste Your AdSense Code into Your Blog. From your dashboard, click on the Editor item in your Appearance dropdown list, as shown below.

Now, choose the Header file as shown below. Insert the AdSense code from Step 1 in between the comments shown in this code, as shown below. Note that these comments are only found on the free WordPress AdSense ready templates I provide – for other WordPress themes you must find this place in your Header.php file code. Remember to click on Update File at the very bottom of this edit screen (not shown).

That will do it except one thing. Wait! It may take 1/2 hour or more before this link unit will show up. It takes time for Google to gather information from your site to match the links to your content.
