With a WordPress.org blog that you host at a service like hostgator, you can:

  • Place ads on your site to make money. You can also do this with Blogspot. You must host the WordPress blog yourself in order to be able to place ads.
  • Implement one of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of available themes.
  • Build a navigational structure within a top menu featuring your important pages that includes sub-items as many levels deep as you wish. With most Blogspot layouts, you can not do this.
  • Build a category structure with as many subcategory levels as you want. Each post in WordPress may be assigned to one or more categories. With a Blogspot blog you do not have the option to categorize posts so it may be more difficult for visitors to find information. The combination of a top menu (like you see on this site) and categories for posts make it a lot easier for visitors to find what they want on your site.
  • Easily implement countless plug-ins, which are add-ons such as photo galleries, polls, and slide shows. Blogspot also has what they call widgets, but they are more limited in their capabilities than WordPress plugins.

But also, with your own hosted blog, you must:

  • Pay about $5-10 in hosting fees per month. With a Blogspot blog, hosting is free. Note that if you get this $9.95/month plan, you can host unlimited numbers of blogs or sites for the single $9.95/month fee, so 10 sites would cost you less than a dollar per month per site.
  • Use ftp software like coreftp (free) to upload a theme or plug-in application to your blog. This isn’t too hard to use and an advantage is that you can quickly bulk load photos or other files to your own a folder for use on your blog site as opposed to uploading one-by-one. With Blogspot, you can only upload photos, one at a time, although no special program is needed.
  • Keep your blog software updated and keep your blog database backed up. Instructions are given on this site to make that process fairly effortless, but you must do it correctly. Once in a great while you need to contact technical support. With Blogspot you don’t need to update anything – it is done for you.

I recently found out about a new cpa network called, Prosperent. It’s kind of like Adsense but instead of text ads, it displays targeted products to your visitors. I think you should definitely check it out.
